CD review TULKAS ‘The Beginning of the End’ – EP

Mexican Metal maniacs Tulkas celebrate their 10th anniversary in 2020. and the career of the quintet features several releases with the two full-length longplayers being certainly the highlight.

Two years after ‘Take the World’ has been shipped to the record stores, the guys deliver with ‘The Beginning of the End’ a next EP. Five songs is what the band recorded, four own ones and a cover version. Tulkas is inspired by the Bay Area sound of the ’80s and therefor it isn’t a big surprise that the cover song comes from Metallica. Interesting though is the choice. ‘Shortest Straw’, taken from ‘…And Justice For All’ isn’t a song that would be the first choice for many other band but Tulkas went for it and the result confirms the decision. Tulkas’ version is raw and comes with more edges than the original, a very successful operation.

Equally interesting are the four own songs. Tulkas starts with ‘O.G.C (Outsider God Creation)’, led-off by a grooving bass. Rather quickly a traditional Thrash Metal riff kicks-in and we are on the way. Bands like Exodus inspire the Mexican five-piece powerhouse, leading to skull-crushing tunes like ‘Extinction’ and ‘Devastation By Greed’. Last but not least, the title track. It’s another smashing Thrash Metal track, but with an unexpected turn half way. Relaxed and placid notes appear all of a sudden, being a peaceful moment on a raging album.

Tulkas doesn’t reinvent the wheel but they add extra power to the Thrash Metal engine. It’s the untamed energy of the youth combined with the dedication to Heavy Metal, being the driving force for these Metal desperados. ‘The Beginning of the End’ is the next step of a band that shows potential for bigger stages.
