CD review BLUES PILLS ‘Holy Moly!’

The start of Swedish Blues Pills was right away a successful one. Founded 2011 in Örebro, Sweden, the quartet delivered their self-titled debut in 2014, an album that went right into the charts with e.g. scoring #4 in the German charts.

Blues Pills didn’t release a lot of studio album so far and with ‘Holy Moly!’ it’s their third record the quartet unleash. After ‘Lady in Gold’, the sophomore release, could enlarge the fan base even more, their new longplayer has the potential to fully live up to expectation and became a next milestone in the band’s vita. ‘Holy Moly!’ builds up on the first two longplayers and adds an extra portion of power which will be a fans delight.

Due to the pandemic the album release had to be postponed but now things come to an end. ‘Holy Moly!’ will be in the record stores on August 21st and it was certainly worth to the wait. Blues Pills new longplayer is a power pack from start to finish and the opener ‘Proud Woman’ is the right punch to get things started. Not only that the song is a musical treat, the lyrics and the theme are also more than relevant these days.

With the exception of ‘Song From a Mourning Dove’, the band sticks to straight-forward musical approach that hits bull-eye. Although being equipped with a bit of a twist, ‘Song From a Mourning Dove’ is certainly a soulful highlight on an emotional album. Elin Larsson expressive vocals are key for this song that also comes with a gentle guitar sound.

Another song I would like to mention here is ‘Dust’. Rock, Blues and Soul units to a stellar tune that has goose-bumps potential. Belonging to the calmer moments on the album, the song’s full of energy and far away from an off-the-shelf ballad. With Larsson’s raspy voice in the lead, the track shows the entire strength of the Swedish four-piece powerhouse. Furthermore there is ‘Kiss My Past Goodbye’ with its strong groove andthe emotive ‘Wish I’d Know’, both tunes you should have heard.

‘Holy Moly!’ captures the spirit of the ‘60s and the ‘70s in an undusted fashion. Blues Pills newest delivery isn’t just a record that carries music. Instead it is an emotional 42 minutes trip with a musical intensity that catches you right away. A warm and organic sound doesn’t leave other options than being fascinated by what these four musicians bring to the plate. Music needs emotion and that’s exactly what ‘Holy Moly!’ delivers right to the money.
