CD review ARCTIC RAIN ‘The One’

Arctic Rain is a new band that has with ‘The One’ their solo debut in the starting blocks. The band, that‘s the result of a collaboration of Pete Alpenborg and guitarist Magnus Berglund, who together with frontman Tobias Jonsson, are the core of Arctic Rain. The rhythm section, including Gert Daun and Jonas Jönsson, joined later on and no barrier could stop the quintet anymore of recording their first longplayer.

Inspired by the Melodic Rock of the 80s and 90s, celebrated by bands like Journey, Whitesnake, Foreigner and others, the five Swedes recorded songs, fueled by catchy melodies and good hooks. Alpenborg, who wrote already songs for bands like House Of Lords has an excellence sense for melodies that leave an impression. As other Swedish Rock bands too, it seems like the guys are gifted with the right intuition and creativity for songs that catches listener‘s attention. Also ‚The One’ is full of these moments, reminding of a time when Melodic Rock had its first heyday.

With all the good stuff said it‘s also that Arctic Rain doesn‘t deliver really new stuff. Although crafted very well and powerfully produced, there aren’t the parts of the unexpected twists. After having listened to the album several times I couldn‘t identify a moment that really surprised. That’s a bit of a lost chance since the potential that comes with the band is obvious. Maybe the next release will include these tweaks and until then, fans of Melodic Rock  surely will not have to suffer listening to ‘The One’.
