CD review MESSIAH ‘Fatal Grotesque Symbols – Darken Universe’ – EP

It was quiet about Messiah for a long time. In the beginning of the first heyday of Swiss Extreme Metal, with bands like Celtic Frost and Cornoner, Messiah started to record a first demo, followed by a debut album in 1986. Unfortunately, the first era of Messiah lasted not longer than 10 years. In the mid 90’s the band came to an end after having released their fifth album ‘Underground’.

26 years later the waiting of the fans has come to an end, because the Swiss Thrash Metal powerhouse have a new album in the pipeline, with an EP doing a good job as being a first appetizer. ‘Fatal Grotesque Symbols – Darken Universe’ is the name of the upcoming EP, featuring three songs.

It all starts with the five minute title track, which gives a good impression of what to expect from Messiah 2020. The track is dark and merciless with a basic aggressiveness giving the song the necessary power. In addition, a clearly noticeable further development of the band can be noted. Driving guitars and a hammering groove are the basic pillars, rounded off by the powerful and dark vocals of Andy Kaina. All works together really well, also adding to a good level of density.

With ‘Space Invaders’ and ‘Extreme Cold Weather’ this EP also features two of the earlier tunes. Both tracks are newly recorded and as a special highlight there are guest singers who give the songs an unique touch. ‘Space Invaders’ comes with growling vocals by Sven Gross (Fleshcrawl) while Eluveitie’s Chrigel Glanzmann gives ‘Extreme Cold Weather’ some new strength. Both versions are well done and lead to the question if a re-recording of a classic like ‘Extreme Cold Weather’ should be considered.

With ‘Fatal Grotesque Symbols – Darken Universe’ Messiah returns successfully and you can be curious about ‘Fracmont’. Expectations have certainly risen by this EP.
