CD review SMOULDER ‘Dream Quest Ends’

Canadian Epic Metal outfit Smoulder was supposed to perform at Up The Hammer 2020 festival in Athens, Greece last night. Unfortunately the Corona virus led to the unfortunate situation of the festival being cancelled. Besides the dramatic effects on organizers, fans and band, metallers at least can welcome Smoulder’s newest release.

‘Dream Quest Ends’ is the title of a six songs comprising EP that follows the great debut ‘Times of Obscene Evil and Wild Daring’. Ten ton hammer riffs, like in ‘Warrior Witch of Hell’ and Sarah Ann’s powerful vocals are again key ingredients of Smoulder’s Epic Metal while the two new songs were written by drummer Kevin Hester a few years ago and got a Smoulder-ish expression for this release.

It’s the title track, leading off the EP. A slo-mo rhythm builds the base for the might doom riff, both representing the immense power that comes with the Canadian quintet. Last but not least this EP features with ‘Cage of Mirrors’ a Manilla Road cover, being an excellent interpretation of the timeless hymn and a real tribute to Mark Shelton (R.I.P.) and Manilla Road.

The bottom half of the tracklisting is dedicated to the three songs from the Smoulder demo ‘The Sword Woman’. ‘Sword Woman’, ‘Voyage of the Sunchaser’ and ‘ The Queen is Gone’ manifest the qualities of song writing, even in an early stage and round off a release that will help the band to gain new fans.

Smoulder live on stage would have certainly an even better experience, but under the given circumstances it’s this EP that provides you with excellent Epic Metal wherever you are. Stay healthy and listen to ‘Dream Quest Ends’.
