CD review BURNING WITCHES ‘Wings of Steel’ (EP)

A band that can be seen as a rising star in Heavy Metal is hailing from Switzerland. Burning Witches is the moniker of a quintet that entered the scene in 2015 with a debut that saw the light of day in 2017. Already the three-track demo was much appreciated and led to being the ‘demo of the month’ in German Metal Hammer and Rock Hard magazines.

With ‘Hexenhammer’ the sophomore studio album was unleashed in 2018. The two longplayers plus intensive touring helped the five Metal ladies to enlarge their fanbase. Right before Christmas it’s now a next release that will help to bridge the waiting time until the next longplayer is ready to go.

‘Wings of Steel’ is the title of the EP and a brand new songs. It’s the first one with Laura Guldemond on board, who took over the vocal responsibilities this year. The Dutch singer and her voice fits perfectly to Burning Witches sound and ‘Wings of Steel’ states this very well. The speedy track is a next highlight in Burning Witches metallic portfolio, equipped with heavy twin guitars, a hard-hitting rhythm-section and the mentioned vocals. Well-done tempo changes add extra excitement to the song that is for sure an appetizer for the next studio release.

Next to ‘Wings of Steel’ the release features three more songs, recorded at the famous Wacken festival in 2019, a first litmus test for Guldemond in front of a huge crowd. ‘Executed’ leads it off after ‘The Witch Circle’ intro faded away. Furthermore it’s ‘Open Your Mind’ and the great ‘Hexenhammer’ that ended up on this release. All live songs are authentic and with a good sound, showing the live power of the Swiss/Dutch quintet. Stay hungry.
