CD review DEATH SS ‘Rock’n’Roll Armageddon’

(8/10) Death SS is a band that belongs to forerunners of hock rock. It was Steve Sylvester and Paul Chain who founded the band in 1977, which mean that the band exist longer than some of the readers of this blog.

The question why the guys never really got into the spotlight is tough to answer. While other ‘shock rockers’ like Alice Cooper and Kiss started big careers, with all the ups and down, the Italian pioneers stood in the shadow of these big acts and one thing is for sure, the music wasn’t the decisive factor.

The impact of the horror image got certainly less over time but it’s the musical quality that remains. The new album ‘Rock’n’Roll Armageddon’ is a bolt statement with Hard Rock songs that combine heaviness and great hooks to an irresistible total.

The longplayer was originally released in 2018 via Sylvester’s Lucifer Rising label and it’s with High Roller Records a label that unveils the beauty of this album to a wider audience, giving it the attention it deserves. Songs like ‘Hellish Knights’ and the spooky ‘Creatures of the Night’are great Hard Rock anthems that don’t have to fear any comparison with genre leaders. And maybe it’s the missing spotlight that allowed the band to stay authentic. This longplayer reflects Death SS and it’s dynamic Hard Rock that’s thundering, raw and chatchy. I like this album, no doubt.
