Texas-based Fervence are still a relatively young band. Formed in 2019, they released their debut album just a year later. Now, with Constructs, the five-piece deliver their third full-length, showcasing a band that has matured and developed a broader musical vocabulary.
Lyrically, the album draws on personal experiences and relationships, exploring the emotions that shape our lives. Fervence translate these themes into music with a clear sense of feeling and dynamics.
Constructs features eleven tracks that cover a considerable amount of musical ground. One side of the band’s sound is built around layered arrangements and Stevie B.’s captivating clean vocals, a combination that becomes apparent right from the album’s opening moments.
Delicate piano notes introduce “Pathways,” soon joined by Stevie B.’s expressive voice. It’s a restrained opening, although the track gradually builds into something more powerful during its second half. “Oculum” picks up where it leaves off, with a contemporary sound and a dense, atmospheric production. Bands like Linkin Park and Evanescence come to mind—at least until the first growls enter the picture, disrupting the initially serene mood. Even then, the song stays true to its underlying direction.
“Interwoven” takes things down a different path. The growls hinted at earlier become more pronounced, and by the time “Miasma” hits, the intensity has escalated considerably. Driven by metalcore influences, it’s an angry, hard-hitting track. Together, the album’s opening four songs offer a clear picture of Fervence’s musical range.
If you’re on board by this point, the rest of the album won’t disappoint. “The Things We Can’t See” is a well-balanced track that leans toward alternative rock and metal, while “Zenith” combines atmospheric textures with outright heaviness.
One thing that stands out throughout Constructs is how naturally the two contrasting sides of Fervence’s musical identity fit together. Despite their differences, the songs feel like parts of a coherent whole. Stevie B. plays a key role here, using her vocal range to connect the dots. She can snarl her way through a track like “Ascension” and shift to a more sensitive delivery on “Providence.” Fervence have a clear musical vision—and the personnel to bring it to life.
Constructs is a multifaceted, engaging album with plenty of nuance and a strong sense of flow. The songs make an immediate impression while revealing more details with each listen. The result is a well-crafted record that balances musical ambition with a solid sense of entertainment.
