Review ITCHY “Happy Little Accidents”

Itchy hail from Eislingen in southern Germany, and even though I grew up only about 35 kilometers away, it took me until fairly recently to really discover the band. That changed when Itchy opened for Sondaschule. I started digging into their music and quickly realized what makes this trio tick. What really caught my attention was their high-energy live show — including guitarist Sibbi crowd-surfing on a guitar case.

I may have come to Itchy late, but the three Swabians have been at it for 25 years. Now they celebrate that milestone with Happy Little Accidents, their tenth studio album. What better way to mark an anniversary than by releasing a new record? It also says a lot about the band’s mindset. Instead of taking the easy route with a greatest-hits collection, Itchy deliver twelve brand-new songs and reaffirm their place in the punk-rock scene.

The first taste of what to expect came with the lead single, “Tribute Song,” which also opens the album. It gets things moving right away and features a nod to the Pixies classic “Where Is My Mind?”, a song that has clearly left its mark on Itchy.

The band also gets political on “Connecting the Dots,” while “Today” takes a more personal approach. Its message is about making time for yourself instead of simply getting swept along by everyday life. And there is no better day to start than today.

Musically, Itchy continue to balance rebellious punk rock with carefully crafted melodies. “Shit Gets Real” is a good example of that combination. Then there are tracks like the driving “Kill the Party,” and wherever you land on the album, the songs have a way of working their way into your head after the first spin.

“Oh Boy” brings a more sentimental moment. The quieter track is dedicated to Bobbes, a longtime friend and touring companion who lost his battle with cancer far too soon.

We already touched on Itchy’s knack for melody, and “Bleeding Heads and Heart Attacks” leans heavily into that strength. It’s the kind of song that practically invites you to sing along, and the same goes for “Constant Faking.” The track takes aim at self-presentation and pretending to live a life that doesn’t really exist. Keep up the act long enough, and eventually you may not even know who you are anymore.

Happy Little Accidents is a solid punk-rock album that combines Itchy’s experience with an undiminished drive to write new songs. After 25 years, the band’s rebellious heart is still beating hard, setting the pace for this record. That’s exactly how punk rock should sound — energetic, direct, and ready to be played loud.
