Review THE PINEAPPLE THIEF “Far and Wide”

Bruce Soord founded The Pineapple Thief in 1999, creating an outlet that has represented a distinctive take on progressive rock for more than 25 years. These days, the bandleader has John Sykes, Steve Kitch, and Gavin Harrison at his side, three accomplished musicians who help bring the latest chapter, Far And Wide, to record stores.

The new album marks the band’s 16th studio release and once again puts Bruce Soord firmly at the creative center. He remains heavily involved in the songwriting, while Far And Wide also marks The Pineapple Thief’s first album for InsideOut Music. What hasn’t changed is the band’s consistent attention to songwriting and the quality of the album as a whole.

We kick things off with the opener “New World Order,” a track that paints its own sonic landscapes without losing sight of the song itself. Carefully developed melodies make it easy to explore the different layers. But don’t expect everything to reveal itself on the first spin. “New World Order” gives up another little detail with each listen, which is very much part of what makes The Pineapple Thief’s music so rewarding.

Another defining feature of Far And Wide is its slightly melancholic atmosphere, which runs like a thread through the album. It is particularly noticeable on “Still Living.” There are no oversized riffs trying to force an emotional response here. Instead, it is the softer tones that gradually settle in and start to work their way under your skin.

That doesn’t mean Far And Wide lacks heavier moments. The opening of “God Knows” arrives with the force of distant thunder before the song moves into calmer territory. It is one of the album’s more forceful passages, yet The Pineapple Thief never sacrifice the layered character that defines their sound.

“Through The Noise” takes things down another notch and ranks among the album’s quieter moments. This atmospheric track puts Soord’s expressive voice front and center, allowing the song to unfold at its own pace. The band’s musical chemistry becomes particularly apparent here, with an impressive solo section adding another dimension without disturbing the song’s mood.

Far And Wide is a musical kaleidoscope where vision, creativity, and musicianship come together. Across its nine tracks, The Pineapple Thief invite you to peel off the layers at your own pace and discover what lies underneath — and there is usually another detail waiting to be found.

Bruce Soord and The Pineapple Thief once again deliver elegant music with plenty of heart and emotion. So sit back, put on the headphones, and enjoy the journey.
