Review DEVIL MASTER “Bloody Dreams”

Philadelphia, Pennsylvania’s Devil Master have been active since 2015 and already have two albums under their belt. With Bloody Dreams, the four-piece now returns with its third full-length, and the band remains firmly committed to its musical blueprint. What comes blasting out of the speakers is a devilish blend of punk and black metal, dark and uncompromising in nature, with clear inspiration drawn from bands such as Venom, Bathory, and Christian Death.

“You Worms’ Vain Delusion” wastes no time getting down to business. The track comes racing out of the gate at a furious pace, but a few doom-infused passages interrupt the charge and give the song some extra character. At just under three minutes, it’s a lean, mean introduction to the album—and one that doesn’t exactly knock politely before entering.

“Trembling at Dusk” adds a handful of atmospheric touches without taking the foot off the accelerator. The song remains an aggressive blackened wrecking ball, though there’s a little more smoke and shadow swirling around it. Standing directly in its path is still not recommended.

With “Sex with Succubus,” a few NWOBHM influences suddenly peek out from behind the curtain, adding another flavor to the mix. “Death Anthem,” on the other hand, brings Devil Master back to more familiar territory. The title track takes a slightly different route. The band stays true to its musical identity but introduces some genuinely eerie moments along the way. A pulsing opening creates an uneasy feeling before the song eventually kicks into gear. Even when the band moves to their stright forward collage of metal and punk, there’s something strangely disorienting about it. It’s not quite chaos, not quite confusion—but it definitely keeps you wondering what the hell is going on. And honestly, that’s part of the fun.

The grand finale comes in the shape of “Farewell Waltz to Unfortune’s Palace,” a ten-minute closer that pulls together many of the different elements found throughout Bloody Dreams. The acoustic opening, decorated with flute, immediately catches you off guard. From there, the song gradually builds in tempo and intensity. The black metal influences slowly crawl out of the shadows, while the quieter passages revisit the flute motif and introduce a sense of desperation and melancholy. As the track progresses, Devil Master keeps shifting between darkness and restraint until the shadows finally swallow the song in a quiet, eerie finale.

Bloody Dreams is a solid release that once again shows how naturally Devil Master can bring together the blackened soul of extreme metal and the reckless energy of punk. There’s plenty of dirt, attitude, and darkness here, but also enough variation to keep things interesting. And with the days getting shorter and the nights getting longer, the timing couldn’t be better. Bloody Dreams is the kind of soundtrack that makes the changing season feel just a little more sinister—and perhaps a little more fun.
