Review COVEN JAPAN “Promised Land”

Heavy metal has enjoyed a long and successful history in Japan. While the country’s passionate fans have helped sustain the scene for decades, bands such as Loudness and Anthem have stood among the leading names in Japanese heavy metal since the mid-1980s.

Now, a younger generation is carrying that tradition forward. Formed in 2016, Coven Japan attracted attention in the underground with their debut album, Earthlings, which received a positive response from fans of traditional heavy metal.

With Promised Land, the band returns with its second full-length album, once again embracing classic heavy metal. Built around a strong twin-guitar attack, the record delivers a series of energetic headbangers, including “Sein zum Tode” – a song that, somewhat surprisingly, carries a German title. Throughout the album, the band’s approach evokes comparisons to classic acts such as Stormwitch without sounding overly derivative.

The album also features two notable guest vocalists. Tomas “Witchfinder” Eriksson of Helvetets Port appears on “Samurai Rising,” while Niels Bang of Animalize lends his voice to “Breath of the Distant Land.” Both contributions fit naturally into the album’s traditional heavy metal style.

With Promised Land, Coven Japan have delivered a solid follow-up that captures the raw spirit of the underground. The album’s unpolished energy gives it an authentic character, while the strong twin-guitar work and memorable songwriting keep things engaging throughout. Although the band’s debut remains the stronger release in my view, Promised Land is another enjoyable effort that should appeal to fans of classic heavy metal, especially those who appreciate music with a little grit and a few edges.
