Since their formation in 2014, they have been seeking an end, and unfortunately, it seems that they have found it. Hamburg’s death metal institution, Endseeker, announced the end of the band, which is a loss for German death metal. However, Endseeker will leave with a bang.
“Coffin Born” is the title of the new EP that demonstrates why the band attracted such a large fanbase. The new release features five songs, including four new ones and a cover nobody expected.
“Enemies of Peace” is the first song we hear after pressing ‘play’. It’s not only a blistering metal anthem with roots in Scandinavian death metal. It is also an anti-fascist statement. Next is the pulsating “No After. No Before,” a perfectly crafted headbanger from a band that doesn’t take its foot off the gas. The subtly embedded melodies are an added bonus that enhances the song’s positive essence.
A wailing siren introduces the title track, a massive riff assault. A sinister, oppressive vibe swings through each note of the song, with the siren ending the song and handing things over to “Life Breeds Death.” The latter starts dense and is extremely heavy. With earth-shaking intensity, the band runs through this grooving monolith.
As I mentioned, the final track is a cover version. “True Survivor,” originally by David Hasselhoff, closes this release, and there is one more extra. Chris Harms from Lords Of The Lost shares vocal duties with Lenny, and this combination works perfectly. Lenny’s harsh voice and Harms’s clean vocals create a perfect arc of tension, and Endseeker’s approach to this cover version is excellent. It’s impressive how they managed to stay close to the original while giving this pop tune an Endseeker twist. There couldn’t be a better way to end a band’s career.
“Coffin Born” shows why we will miss Endseeker. These five guys are an important part of the German death metal scene, and their sold-out show at Hamburg’s Knust will certainly be an epic goodbye party. Horns up, and let’s see what the future brings.
