Review SKINDRED “You Got This”

Skindred has always been a joy to listen to, whether on record or on stage. While their live performances carry an unmatched intensity, their studio albums also deliver pure enjoyment from start to finish.

Following the release of “Smile” in 2023, the band returns with their latest studio album, “You Got This,” continuing their signature fusion of reggae, rock, and metal. The album opens with its groove-driven title track, immediately setting the tone. From the first notes, a sense of positivity and uplifting energy defines the song and the entire record.

The phrase “You Got This” itself traces back to a personal experience of frontman Benji Webbe. During a visit to a fitness studio, he witnessed a man rebuilding his life after suffering a stroke, encouraged by his coach’s repeated use of those very words. This message of resilience, positivity, and self-confidence forms the thematic backbone of the album.

Listening to “You Got This” instantly boosts one’s mood. Tracks like “Born Fe Dis” radiate high spirits, combining heavy riffs with Webbe’s powerful, charismatic vocals. Even when the band leans into more melodic territory, as on “Can I Get a,” the songs retain their uplifting and energizing character.

What truly defines the album is its seamless blend of styles and influences. The playful, reggae-infused “Broke” adds a lighthearted, tongue-in-cheek moment that would feel out of place on a typical rock or metal record yet fits perfectly within Skindred’s genre-bending framework. Elements of dub and ska shine through on “Give Thanks,” further enriching the album’s vibrant sonic palette.

One of the album’s standout moments is “Glass,” an emotional highlight that pays tribute to the people who have influenced Webbe’s musical journey. Fusing reggae rhythms with heavier guitar work, the track embodies the spirit of artistic openness and celebrates influences that extend beyond any single genre.

With “You Got This,” Skindred deliver a superb album that naturally builds on the foundation laid by “Smile.” Webbe and his bandmates remain committed to their unique musical vision. Though their diverse influences might appear to pull them in various directions, their identity remains unmistakably clear. Skindred stands for positivity, energy, and a genre-blending approach resulting in a distinctive crossover sound.

Ultimately, “You Got This” is more than just an album – it’s an experience designed to lift spirits and transform tough days into brighter ones.
