Review VOMITORY “In Death Throes”

Vomitory are one of the enduring pillars of Scandinavian death metal. Formed in 1989, the band released their ferocious debut album, “Raped in Their Own Blood”, in 1996. After two ground-breaking releases, they signed with Metal Blade Records, a significant step forward in their career, before ultimately disbanding in 2013.
In 2018, founding members Urban and Tobias Gustafsson reunited with frontman Erik Rundqvist, reviving their creative partnership. Although new material did not appear for several years, the band returned with a new album in 2023, signalling a renewed chapter in their legacy.

Three years later, Vomitory strike again with “In Death Throes”, a blistering addition to their discography. The Karlstad-based band wastes no time, opening the record with “Rapture in Rupture”. Dating back to early writing sessions in 2024, the track is a high-velocity assault, driven by Rundqvist’s signature growled vocals and searing guitar solos. It stands as a merciless statement, proving that Vomitory have retained their raw aggression over the decades.

Another track from those initial sessions, “Two and a Half Men”, also plays a key role in shaping the album’s direction. Fueled by relentless blast beats, the track delivers an intense, crushing blow, setting the tone of uncompromising intensity that defines “In Death Throes”.

The band’s sound continues to evolve within its established framework, as can be heard in “For Gore and Country”, which incorporates elements of thrash metal into their death metal foundation. The influence of bands like Slayer is evident, adding a sharp, aggressive edge to the composition.

Throughout the album’s ten tracks, there is barely a moment to breathe, with each track functioning as an unrelenting assault on both eardrums and neck muscles. Yet Vomitory demonstrate a notable sense of dynamics, incorporating subtle variations within their brutality. This is particularly apparent in “Wrath Unbound” where more melodic passages add depth. Meanwhile, “Erased in Red” opens with a commanding bassline that leads into a groove-heavy, headbanging anthem that is reminiscent of a hellish procession.

Ultimately, Vomitory have lost none of their intensity. “In Death Throes” is a no-compromise, sonic wrecking ball that demolishes everything in its path. For fans of old-school death metal, this album delivers a ruthless and thoroughly rewarding experience from start to finish.
