New York death metal institution Immolation return with their new album, “Descent”, the band’s 12^(th) studio release and the follow-up to 2022’s “Act of God”.
As with their previous work, Immolation deliver a relentlessly brutal record, which is immediately evident in the blistering opener, “These Vengeful Winds”. This track makes it clear that Immolation’s intensity knows no bounds as the band pushes forward with unwavering force. This album is a powerful statement that they remain firmly among the finest in the extreme metal genre.
In many ways, “Descent” reflects its title through the album’s overarching themes. The quartet once again examines the current state of humanity, exposing its failures and its descent into chaos driven by ego, turning the world into a hellscape. Alongside the opener, the lead single “Adversary” offered an early glimpse of what was to come. It’s an oppressive, dynamic track that shifts between blast beats and crushing grooves, especially in its massive midsection. Combined with intricate leads and solos, the song serves as a blueprint for the album as a whole.
Immolation aren’t here to reinvent their sound — and no one expects them to. Instead, the band has refined its signature style, sharpening its edges and reinforcing its strengths. This approach pays off on tracks like “Attrition”. Generally slower in tempo, the song brings the groove to the forefront. It proves that Immolation doesn’t rely solely on speed; they can slow things down without sacrificing intensity, and in fact the song becomes even more menacing. “Attrition” carries a sinister weight that grabs hold immediately.
Another standout track is “God’s Last Breath”, which lives up to its ominous title. Its slower, crushing groove and massive riffing hit with the force of a freight train. This track is one of the fiercest moments on the album, culminating in a devastating, slow-motion, riff-driven finale.
Immolation shift gears with “False Ascent” before offering a brief breather with “Banished”. This dark and unsettling atmospheric interlude sets the stage for the vigorous title track that brings the album to a powerful close.
Immolation remain one of the most influential bands in death metal, having contributed to shaping the genre from its earliest days. Their debut album hinted at their future potential, and nearly four decades later, they continue to release stunning records with undiminished intensity. This enduring commitment, driven largely by Ross Dolan and Robert Vigna, is truly remarkable.
Horns up for this hellish, uncompromising death metal assault!
