Metal Church are among the greats of heavy metal, with their early albums being true classics of powerful US metal. Following the release of “Congregation of Annihilation”, the future of this iconic band appeared uncertain. However, bandleader Kurdt Vanderhoof managed to breathe new life into the band. A big part of this revival comes down to a refreshed line-up featuring three new members who are far from rookies — these experienced and highly respected musicians have impressive professional backgrounds.
Just look at the rhythm section: Ken Mary and Dave Ellefson are veterans with metal running through their veins. Adding to this is new vocalist Brian Allen, whose presence is a key factor in this successful comeback. Combined with Vanderhoof’s and Rick Van Zandt’s powerful guitar playing, the band delivers energetic heavy metal bursting with intensity — exactly what you’d expect from a true metal institution.
A first glimpse of what was to come arrived in late 2025 with “F.A.F.O.”, an up-tempo metal blast that channels the raw energy of early Metal Church while sounding firmly rooted in the present. Allen’s vocals are particularly impressive as he successfully bridges the styles of former singers David Wayne and Mike Howe while maintaining his own distinct identity. This balance creates the perfect vocal foundation for the new era of Metal Church.
“Dead to Rights”, the band’s 14th studio album, builds on the strong impression left by “F.A.F.O.” The second single, “Brainwash Game” also opens the album. It’s an intense metal track that immediately sets the tone. Lyrically, it addresses themes of modern manipulation and the blurring of the lines between fact and fiction — topics that resonate throughout its heavy riffs and aggressive delivery.
The title track is another highlight. Driven and intense, it embodies the classic Metal Church sound, moving at a slightly more moderate pace that is especially satisfying for headbangers. In fact, it evokes memories of the band’s “Blessing in Disguise” era.
Overall, the album successfully reconnects with the band’s early days without resorting to self-imitation. The new line-up brings fresh energy to “Dead to Rights”, while Vanderhoof ensures the signature sound remains intact. It is this combination that makes the album truly stand out.
Tracks such as “Feet to the Fire” and “The Show” are prime examples of U.S. metal. “Heaven Knows (Slip Away)”, which opens with Mary’s powerful drum work, is another pulsating track that reveals its depth over time. The closing track, “My Wrath” is more direct, showcasing the thrash metal influences that Metal Church occasionally incorporate into their sound.
“Dead to Rights” sees the band make a remarkable comeback after a period of uncertainty. The odds of such a strong comeback weren’t high, which makes holding this album in your hands all the more exciting. Metal Church have delivered a record that connects seamlessly to their legacy while sounding fresh and revitalised. It successfully brings their signature sound into the present and fully lives up to expectations.
