Review ANNEKE VAN GIERSBERGEN “La Mort” – EP

It’s an exciting year for Dutch singer Anneke van Giersbergen, whose name remains inseparably linked with The Gathering. Although the band had already released two albums before she joined, her arrival marked a decisive turning point. With “Mandylion,” the progressive rock outfit took a major step toward broader recognition, establishing a sound that would resonate far beyond their initial audience. This year, the classic “Mandylion”- lineup is set to reunite for a tour, appearing at some of the most prominent summer festivals to celebrate the album 30th anniversary.

At the same time, the singer continues to explore her solo path. She has outlined an ambitious trilogy, the first chapter of which, “La Vie,” was released last year. Now comes “La Mort,” the second installment in this carefully conceived three-part cycle.

“La Mort” is a deeply emotional four-track EP, filled with songs that feel intimate and direct. Each composition cuts straight to the heart, but the most impactful moment arrives in the finale. “Sail Towards the Sun” deals with themes of loss and mortality, as van Giersbergen reflects on the passing of her father. She evokes vivid memories of time spent together – moments on a sailing boat during summer -creating a piece that is both profoundly sorrowful and quietly comforting. The grief is palpable, yet so is the enduring warmth of remembrance.

“Red Sky,” the EP’s lead single, offers a different kind of depth. Centered around her expressive vocals, the track unfolds in layers, showcasing her musical versatility. It is a restrained, almost understated composition, yet one that draws the listener in through its emotional nuance. It stands as a reminder that songs do not need to be loud or grandiose to leave a lasting impression.

The EP opens with “Fade In Fade Out,” introduced by delicate piano lines and van Giersbergen’s striking voice. The track gradually builds in intensity while maintaining a melancholic undertone that perfectly aligns with the EP’s theme. Moments of energy blend seamlessly with tenderness, making it a compelling introduction and a clear reflection of her artistic vision.

With “La Mort,” Anneke van Giersbergen delivers a remarkable second chapter. Across four songs, she captures a wide spectrum of emotions, reflecting life’s inherent contrasts. Despite its title, the EP does not dwell solely in sorrow or silence. Instead, it expands on its central theme with richness and vitality, adding layers of meaning and humanity. It is a beautifully crafted work and a strong continuation of an already captivating trilogy.
