Review HELLRIPPER “Coronach”

Scottish metal warrior James McBain founded Hellripper in 2015, initially releasing an EP with the intention of contributing to the local scene in Aberdeen. Things quickly took a different turn. More than a decade later, Hellripper has evolved far beyond its regional roots, earning international acclaim and a devoted following.

Now, over ten years after its inception, McBain’s project stands as a formidable force in the global metal scene, culminating in a deal with Century Media. “Coronach,” the first album born from this collaboration, is an eight-track release packed with creativity and ferocious energy. Lyrically, it once again draws deeply from Scottish heritage and literature, giving the record a strong thematic backbone.

Hellripper wastes no time setting the tone. Opening track “Hunderprest” launches the album with unrelenting intensity. Fast-paced, aggressive, and driven by rasping vocals, it delivers a raw, blackened spirit from start to finish – completely uncompromising in its execution.

“Kinchyle (Goatkraft and Granite)” feels unmistakably like Hellripper, yet introduces a slightly different dimension. While maintaining the project’s core sound, the track leans more into melody and features a sinister, atmospheric midsection that adds depth and contrast.

It’s these subtle details that truly define “Coronach.” “The Art of Resurrection” begins unexpectedly with a piano intro before erupting into a crushing riff and a blood-curdling scream. From there, it transforms into a pounding metal anthem, complete with a surprisingly melodic middle passage. This interplay of elements highlights the versatility of extreme metal – and McBain’s ability to wield it effectively is what sets Hellripper apart from the pack.

Fans of relentless speed metal will revel in the blistering “Blakk Satanik Fvkkstorm,” while “Sculpture’s Cave” opens with a grooving bassline and builds into a pulsating, rhythm-driven anthem.

The album closes with its title track, “Coronach,” an eight-minute epic that serves as a grand finale. Cinematic and steeped in a dark, ominous atmosphere, the song encapsulates McBain’s full musical vision. Clean vocals, growls, and harsh screams all find their place, showcasing both technical skill and creative ambition. Blending traditional and epic metal with shadowy undertones, the track delivers a dramatic and powerful conclusion.

With “Coronach,” Hellripper has crafted an outstanding new full-length album. McBain raises the bar once again, delivering his most refined and sophisticated work to date. It stands as one of the standout metal releases of 2026. Horns up – it’s time to spin “Coronach” one more time.
