The Italian death metal band Fulci is known for their brutal sound as well as their fascination with horror movies. Their new EP combines these aspects, with the songs serving as a soundtrack to the short film “Risorsero dalla Tomba e Fu…L’Apocalisse! (“They Rose from the Tomb and It Was…The Apocalypse!”)”. Directed by Domenico Montixi, the film fuses paranormal horror with a spaghetti western atmosphere, and Fulci deliver the music for this 30-minute production.
The EP opens with the title track, an instrumental piece. “Risorsero dalla Tomba e Fu… L’Apocalisse!” is an eerie and atmospheric introduction that gives listeners the shivers. While listening to the intro, one can sense the impending evil that stares at you during “Paura che Uccide.” The latter is a typical Fulci riff monster with barking growls. Combined with Slayer-esque leads, the song is a signature Fulci piece with sledgehammer heaviness.
“Apoteosi del Mistero” is the last track on this EP, combining the cinematic character of Fulci with the brutal energy that defines the band’s sound. Fulci covers this Fabio Frizzi song, which actually comes from “City of the Living Dead.” A notable feature is the guest vocals by Nate Garrett (Spirit Adrift). His clean vocals add versatility to this slowly pounding death metal interpretation of a classic song.
“Risorsero Dalla Tomba E Fu… L’Apocalisse!” nicely bridges the gap from “Duck Face Killing” to a new long player. This EP embodies everything Fulci stands for. It is the musical equivalent of an sinister grimace, and the music you get in return is fascinating if you take the challenge.
