The horror theme unites Rob Zombie‘s creative projects. The musician and filmmaker has a passion for scary and creepy storylines, which form the basis of his movies and provide the lyrical inspiration for his studio albums.
This time, it’s another musical journey through the world of horror. The provocative title of Zombie’s newest release is “The Great Satan”, and it features a total of 15 songs. This new album is a classic Rob Zombie release. It blends pounding industrial beats and aggressive riffing with a smirking horror mask staring at you.
The album opens with a song called “F.T.W. 84”, a great industrial stomper with a cinematic intro. This superb start is continued in “Tarantula”. Next is “I’m a Rock’n’Roller”. This song fuses the classic Alice Cooper vibe with harsh industrial sounds. The embedded samples provide a welcome break from this throbbing industrial anthem.
The album also includes two interludes, “Who I Am” and “Welcome to the Electric Age”, which support the flow of the album well and provide an atmospheric counterpoint to high-energy songs like the anarchic “Black Rat Coffin”. The latter picks up the spirit of “I’m a Rock’n’Roller” and is another dense industrial metal blast. The chorus especially stands out, bursting with energy. “Punks and Demons” is one of the lead singles. It is a raging song with a hypnotising beat. There are no unnecessary elements or frills. This song embodies the essence of industrial metal, roaring out of the speakers without compromise.
“Revolution Motherfuckers” and the manic “Sir Lord Acid Wolfman” both have a more modern twist. These two songs, however, demonstrate the musical versatility of the album. Although Rob Zombie is rooted in industrial metal, his wider approach to music resonates through these two songs.
Fast and furious — that’s “The Black Scorpion”. Blending an anarchic punk vibe with some metal elements, the song is one of the heaviest moments of the album. In contrast, the atmospheric outro, “Grave Discontent” could easily be on the soundtrack of a dystopian horror movie.
Rob Zombie delivers another well-crafted chapter. It is a typical Rob Zombie album, building on industrial metal and stretching the genre’s framework. It is an entertaining and multifaceted album that demonstrates why Zombie is considered one of the most influential artists in this genre.
