“L.I.F.T.” is the title of the new Neal Morse Band album, and creating this record was no easy undertaking. This was due to the fact that drummer Mike Portnoy had rejoined Dream Theater. Suddenly, the iconic drummer’s schedule was rather full, but there was an unexpected gap which the NMB used to start working on “L.I.F.T.”.
The NMB consists of Neal Morse, Mike Portnoy, Eric Gillette, Bill Hubauer and Randy George. Each of them is a master of their craft, a fact that resonates through each song on their latest studio album. After outlining a concept, “Fully Alive” took shape rather quickly. This soulful moment on ‘L.I.F.T.’ showcases the band’s skills. This tune contains references to The Beatles and Genesis, revealing some of the band’s influences.
NMB is more than just five musicians. It’s a combination of skills that’s greater than the sum of its parts. “L.I.F.T.” is an album featuring sophisticated, emotional songs. The upbeat “Reaching” is one of the longest songs on the album and showcases the band’s exquisite musical talent. “Reaching” is a swinging song with a positive vibe.
In contrast, “Hurt People” is a darker song. The title alone suggests that it is not a happy feel-good song. “Hurt People” is one of the heaviest songs on the album. This dark and gloomy tune demonstrates the album’s versatility. Lyrically, the album is based on a spiritual theme and takes a conceptual approach. The music amplifies the storytelling, and it is the combination of words and notes that makes “L.I.F.T.” an outstanding progressive rock album. Each song is full of finesse and twists, exemplified by the solo parts in “Hurt People” which demonstrate an endless flow of creativity.
As expected, “L.I.F.T.” also has a great finale. The eleven-minute closer is titled “Love All Along”. The song showcases NMB’s musical freedom. It’s a moment when ambition meets imagination. You can easily get lost in this world of cinematic sounds. “Love All Along”, as well as the entire album, creates soundscapes waiting to be explored by passionate music enthusiasts.
“L.I.F.T.” is NMB’s superb next album, showcasing the passion and musical vision of the five musicians who are ambassadors of contemporary progressive rock. “L.I.F.T.” is a defining NMB album that seamlessly connects with their previous work. “L.I.F.T.” is a treat for the ears and the mind.
