Triumpher was founded in Athens, Greece in 2019 and launched a promising debut album, “Storming the Walls”, in 2023. This brought the band to the attention of No Remorse Records, the label that launched Triumpher’s second full-length album, “Spirit Invictus”.
With “Piercing the Heart of the World”, the Greek quintet continues its metallic adventure in fine style. Triumpher’s sound draws inspiration from bands like Virgin Steele and Manowar. Songs like the throbbing opener “Black Blood” clearly show the band’s affinity with the self-proclaimed Kings of Metal. While the latter are more focused on maintaining their image than writing good music, it is bands like Triumpher who are fully committed to pounding, anthemic heavy metal. “Black Blood” is a raw gem and a thrilling start to this album.
“Destroyer” is a sonic wrecking ball, hitting you at high speed with a galloping, Overkill-infused bassline. The variety that Triumpher adds to their music is evident in songs such as “Ithaca (Return of the Eternal King)”. The cinematic beginning of the song speaks for itself. Triumpher aren’t afraid to add some drama to their music, and songs like the aforementioned “Ithaca (Return of the Eternal King)” demonstrate this aspect particularly well. These songs are more than just a combination of a few genre elements. Triumpher create music with a unique identity, regardless of where their influences come from. Listen to the nine-minute epic “Naus Apidalia”. The final chapter of the album, it is a milestone in epic power metal. The song bursts out of the speakers with energy and vigour, while maintaining a cinematic quality.
Triumpher also ensures a good flow throughout the album. The acoustic interlude “Vaults of Immortals” provides a welcome break from the general pattern of the album, while the dramatic “The Flaming Sword” brings you back into the realms of heavy metal.
The previous album was excellent, and Triumpher have maintained the high quality of their music. “Piercing the Heart of the World” doesn’t feature many elementary adjustments compared to the predecessor. The new songs demonstrate the next level the band has reached in terms of songwriting and shaping their trademarks. This album will delight fans of 1980s epic metal who have been disappointed by their former heroes.
