2026 marks the tenth anniversary of UK-based metal band Urne. The London-based band debuted with an album called “Serpent & Spirit” in 2021, which was probably not the best year for a new band to release their first album. However, it seems that these circumstances motivated the three-piece band, who are now launching their third studio album.
The title of the newest album is “Setting Fire to the Sky”, and it features nine songs. Urne’s musical approach is interesting, as the band fuses many influences to create a new musical phenomenon.
Take “Weeping the World” as an example. Thrash metal elements meet a progressive structure, transforming into more sludge-based moments. Combined with a massive sound, the song is a great representation of what Urne stands for musically.
“Weeping the World” is the second song on the album, following the opener, “Be Not Dismayed”. The album kicks off with an acoustic guitar. It feels like the calm before the storm. The storm starts the moment the first riff kicks in. This song is a great introduction to the album. With its haunting rhythm, the track is a real headbanger that reminds me of bands like Machine Head.
The mesmerising title track is slower paced but has the power of a freight train and hits your subconscious. Combined with a melodic chorus, it is another example of Urne’s musical firepower.
One of the best things about this album is its unpredictability, which, alongside an immense level of generated power, is the only constant factor. Take “Harken the Waves” as an example. At nine minutes long, it is the longest song on the album, showcasing the band’s talent for creating captivating, layered songs. The song begins with a longer intro-like section. Things slowly build up to a dark track with a demonic feel. It’s a song with the potential to turn all colours black. The melodic moments might be the little sunrays part of this dark masterpiece, which combines rock and metal in perfection. The fact that Troy Sanders (Mastodon) makes a guest appearance on “Harken the Waves” speaks for itself.
“The Ancient Horizon” salutes the pioneers of heavy metal, from Ritchie Blackmore to Ronnie James Dio, while “Towards the Harmony Hall” is an assault on the ears with massive riffs and a soulful chorus. “Breath” with its intense sadness is a counterpart to the blasting metal anthems. “Breath” is a somber and grief-stricken moment and hereby a highlight that breaks the pattern without challenging the spirit of the album.
Urne deliver a terrific new album. “Setting Fire to the Sky” features music that is almost impossible to describe. It spans rock and metal, aggressive riffs and soulful moments, and layered soundscapes and wrecking-ball intensity. It’s certainly a strong contender for the 2026 poll.
