The Eternal might not be very well known, but it’s a band worth paying attention to. The band originated in Melbourne, Australia. Founded in 2004, the outfit has been around for more than two decades and has released seven albums, the latest of which is the 2024 release, “Skinwalker”.
“Skinwalker” opened the door for The Eternal to connect with European metal fans, as it was one of their first releases through Reigning Phoenix Music. One and a half years later, The Eternal released a new EP, “Celestial, ” which showcases the band’s talent once again. The new release features an intro and four new songs, as well as a remix of “Everlasting,” originally from the band’s second album.
Over time, The Eternal has evolved into a band with a global presence. They are now more of an Australian/Finnish collaboration that worked on the newest release. Mark Kelson, the band’s mainman, provides the musical direction, with Richie Poate on guitar and a rhythm section with experience playing with Amorphis. Jan Rechberger and Niclas Etelävuori are part of the quartet launching with “Celestial,” the band’s next highlight.
From Dream Theater–like soundscapes (“Celestial Veil”) to Paradise Lost–reminding melancholy (“It All Ends”), this EP offers a wide range of gloomy sounds. A heavy-hearted mood runs through the entire release, which includes the somber, echoing “Bleeding Into Light.”
The album ends with a reimagined version of the 20-year-old classic, “Everlasting MMXXVI.” With melodic hooks and a gothic vibe, the song bridges the past and present of The Eternal.
“Celestial” is a well-executed next step for the band. Each song captivates listeners while spinning the record for the first time, and there are enough details and facets to make “Celestial” a lasting joy for fans of wistful metal.
