Review DANKO JONES “Leo Rising”

Danko Jones made their debut in 2002 with the album “Born a Lion” and it was clear from that moment on that we were listening to a musician who embodies the spirit of rock. The Canadian singer and guitarist found a long-term collaborator in John Calabrese, and with Rich Knox on drums since 2011, the band has a stable line-up. This helps the trio to write and produce high-octane rock, a characteristic also evident in their latest studio effort.

“Leo Rising” is the title of this thrilling rock adventure that features “I Love It Louder”, an energetic rock song with a title that perfectly sums up the musical approach of the Toronto-based musician.

Danko Jones is known for his high-energy rock music that exudes a non-stop party atmosphere, as exemplified by the lively track “Everyday is Saturday Night”. The album delivers what you need and “What You Need” is the title of the opener too. There couldn’t be a better way to start the album than with such a vibrant rocker, followed by an homage to Kiss. “Diamond in the Rough” is a 70s-inspired rock tune with a fascinating guitar solo by none other than Marty Friedman.

“I’m Going Blind” is another early 70s-infused rocker, while “It’s a Celebration” continues the party vibe. The slower-paced and darker “Pretty Stuff” comes next, before “Gotta Let It Go” brings back a positive and powerful groove. A pounding beat kicks off “Too Slick for Love”, the closing track on “Leo Rising”. This pulsating finale showcases why Danko Jones belongs among the greats of electrifying rock.

Every song on “Leo Rising” is a powerful ode to rock and hard rock — songs that showcase the thrill of this genre. It’s impossible to feel down while listening to these songs, as each one is bursting with energy. “Born a Lion” hit the shelves in 2002, and the lion still roars on “Leo Rising”, with claws even sharper than 23 years ago.
