Spock’s Beard launched “Noise Floor” in 2018, their latest studio album, and it took seven long years before the band returned with “The Archaeoptimist”. The band features three longtime members — Alan Morse, Dave Meros and Ryo Okumoto — who form the core of Spock’s Beard together with Ted Leonard, who joined in 2011. The band also features a new member, drummer Nick Potters.
Drawing inspiration from 1970s progressive rock, Spock’s Beard has created its own distinctive sound, which forms the backbone of the new album, with “Invisible” serving as the lead single. The song is also the opener of “The Archaeoptimist” and a great choice to represent the album. With its jumping rhythm, various layers and great hooks, it is a fine choice to start the album.
The opener, with its memorable melodies, is instantly engaging, while “Fourthoghts”, with all its twists and turns, showcases the band’s more sophisticated side. Although the vocal lines are melodic, this is a song that, with all its details, demands several listens.
The first four songs build up a level of excitement that reaches its zenith in the title track. ‘The Archaeoptimist’ is a 20-minute epic, which is no surprise given the progressive rock masters, but it is always a treat and a challenge. The treat here is the soundscapes and melodies that the band incorporates into such a composition. At the same time, there is so much to explore that it takes time for your senses to process what you’re listening to. This is one of the great aspects of Spock’s Beard’s music. The band has all the tools necessary to craft great melodies and integrate them into a multifaceted musical journey.
Nothing is plain sailing on “The Archaeoptimist” and yet the songs’ sophisticated light-heartedness makes the album a delight for your ears and mind.
Take the closing track, “Next Step” as another example. The final track starts with a long, piano-driven opening that slowly builds to a cinematic, emotional crescendo. After a bit more than a minute, the song gains intensity, and the calm, reflective beginning blossoms into an energetic progressive rock song.
“The Archaeoptimist” is a fine addition to Spock’s Beard’s list of great releases. It is the next masterfully crafted progressive rock album, blending emotional intensity with musical savvy.
