“No Life ‘Til Leather: A Tribute to Metallica’s Kill ‘Em All” is a stunning tribute album that makes perfect sense. Firstly, Metallica’s debut album revolutionised heavy metal with its raw, electrifying energy. The metal pioneers spearheaded the Bay Area thrash metal scene and influenced numerous bands.
As well as the importance of the album itself, it is the group of artists and bands who recorded their own versions of the ten songs from Metallica’s debut that impresses. Veterans and young bands from different subgenres all contributed a song to this blistering tribute album, and we start with Tailgunner. This relatively new UK band covered “Hit the Lights”, and, as the tracklist follows the original album order, they kick things off. It’s an up-tempo version of the song, followed by “The Four Horsemen” by The Almighty. Ricky Warwick and his bandmates don’t deviate too much from the original, adding a certain rock aspect to this classic.
“Motorbreath” is a straightforward song, and progressive rock band Soen give this high-octane metal track a slightly progressive touch. We could go on and on talking about the songs, since all of these cover versions are great, including the dark and evil version of “Whiplash” by Motörhead. Lemmy’s thumping bass and his raw voice fit perfectly, reflecting the rebellious spirit of the era.
Another veteran band performs “Phantom Lord”. Biff Byford and Saxon deliver a stunning version of the song, followed by “No Remorse” This song appeared on the re-recording of Diamond Head‘s debut album, “Lightning to the Nations”, and kick-started this endeavour. Listening to this song makes it clear why. Among all these thrilling versions, one stands out even more. Bay Area legends Testament recorded their version of “Seek & Destroy”, capturing the spirit of the original and taking it to the next level. It’s a highlight on an album full of outstanding tracks. It’s massive!
Last but not least, metal icons Raven end the album with “Metal Militia” — as they joined Metallica on their very first tour, it makes perfect sense to include them on this blistering tribute album.
“No Life ‘Til Leather: A Tribute to Metallica’s Kill ‘Em All” is a fantastic tribute album, honouring a band and an album that defined a new branch of heavy metal. The sheer number of great artists who contributed to “No Life ‘Til Leather: A Tribute to Metallica’s Kill ‘Em All” demonstrates the respect and impact that Metallica and “Kill ‘Em All” have had.
