“Magic 8-Ball” is the latest release from Norwegian art rock band Gazpacho, and their first in five years. The new studio album features eight songs about fate and its effects. Musically refined and lyrically sophisticated, “Magic 8-Ball” is based on a central concept. The philosophical paradox of the ‘Ship of Theseus’ inspired the band to create a concept that runs through the entire album. The theme is identity and how it changes when you lose parts of yourself one by one. Are you still the same person? Gazpacho take this intriguing question and create a conceptual storyline for their new album. Each song tells the tale of a character at a breaking point — a moment of permanent change. It is a fascinating lyrical concept that is worth exploring; it gives you food for thought.
Musically, Gazpacho deliver another cornerstone of art rock, starting with the nine-minute opener, “Starling”. This calmer, layered beginning showcases Gazpacho’s ability to generate exceptional soundscapes. Without being loud or roaring, the band creates an intense emotional impact, drawing you into a world of sound and emotional depth from the very beginning. Music should evoke emotions, and Gazpacho are masters when it comes to this.
A soulful heaviness runs throughout the album, providing a basic vibe and “We Are Strangers” is no exception, coming with a chorus that captivates from the first listen.
“Sky King” showcases the band’s versatility very well. The verse, driven by piano and vocals, leads to an energetic chorus that, while not being loud by definition, is one of the more intense moments on the album.
The title track is another notable moment on the album, as it deviates slightly from the other songs. It is a relatively catchy tune and the almost light-hearted swing makes “Magic 8-Ball” an appealing piece of music. The bigger soundscapes and filigree approach to layered music return with ‘Immerwahr’, and the two songs together reflect the musical diversity offered by the band. As the song progresses, it gradually intensifies, maintaining its core essence throughout.
“Unrisen” is the final track on the album, opening calmly with emotional, almost fragile vocals at its core. The level of intensity slowly rises, building to a bombastic finale that shapes the final third of the track. This cinematic masterpiece guarantees a great finish to the album.
“Magic 8-Ball” is lyrically and musically delightful. Listening to this album on a grey Sunday in November feels like entering another world, with “Magic 8-Ball” being the music for this experience. Gazpacho is renowned for its exceptional music, and this album is a superb continuation of their musical endeavor.
