“In the Court of the Dragon” has been in stores for four years, and Trivium hasn’t released new material since then. The band has played some live shows and will embark on a North American tour in October though. In this context, it makes sense that the Trivium will launch some new songs under the album title “Struck Dead.”
“Struck Dead” is a three song EP that will hit the shelves end of October and the first song, “Bury Me With my Scream”, has been revealed already in early August this year. It’s a massive modern sounding thrash metal song that lives by the contrast of raging parts and clean vocal passages, with a well-crafted melody as the guiding force. Overall, the song is a blasting metal track conveying moments of inner strife and emptiness. Trivium captures this feeling in “Bury Me With My Scream,” the first song on a furious and haunting EP.
Next on the EP is the title track, “Struck Dead (Pain Is Easier to Remember),” which picks up the vibe from the opener. A mighty riff serves as the foundation for a track with a melodic chorus. Listening to these songs is like witnessing a catharsis, as they are all heavily emotional.
“Six Walls Around Me” fits into this context yet starts differently. The acoustic guitar introduces the song. The vibe is rather peaceful, contrasting from the other tracks. However, this doesn’t last long, as hell breaks loose again after one minute. The basic pattern of harsh shouts and melodic elements remains. At the same time, “Six Walls Around Me” is the most versatile song on the album, with various layers and twists. While the first two tracks follow a wrecking-ball approach, the last track on the EP showcases Matt Heafy and his bandmates’ full range of skills.
“Struck Dead” is Trivium’s return with new songs, and the band hasn’t lost any of its fascinating sound. It’s energetic, emotionally intense, and musically brilliant.
