Review DOLMEN GATE “Echoes Of Ancient Tales”

The Portuguese metal scene includes well-known bands like Moonspell, as well as some lesser-known ones. One of these is Dolmen Gate, who hail from Lisbon. They are a relatively new band. Founded in 2021, the five-piece made their debut in 2024 with an album called “Gateway of Eternity”. A year later, the sophomore release, “Echoes of Ancient Tales”, hit the shelves, continuing the band’s journey through the world of epic metal.

Dolmen Gate pick up where they left off with their debut album, as reflected in songs such as the dramatic opener, “Souls to Sea”. At nine minutes long, the first song encapsulates much of what defines Dolmen Gate’s music. Powerful riffs, well-crafted soundscapes, and Ana’s crystal-clear vocals are crucial assets, as are the finely crafted solo parts. Together, these elements enable the band to create these longer tunes, maintaining the thrill throughout.

From the acoustic parts to the heavy blasts of ‘Carthage Eternal’, the Portuguese metal force delivers skilfully crafted metal songs. Infectious melodies and a mystical mood run through the various album tracks, including the acoustic interlude “Afore the Storm”, which leads into the closing track, “We are the Storm”. The latter is the finale and another impressive example of their songwriting talent.

“Echoes of Ancient Tales” is an album that will provide listeners with lasting joy. From start to finish, captivating melodies and well-crafted soundscapes are the hallmarks of this album, and although this kind of music isn’t entirely new, it’s Dolmen Gate’s dedication to epic metal that provides long-lasting joy.
