Review THE VINTAGE CARAVAN “Portals”

“Portals” is the sixth album from the Icelandic rock band The Vintage Caravan. The band’s name suggests that the trio is into 70s-inspired rock. A certain retro charm resonates with each of the band’s records, and the newest effort is no exception.

While The Vintage Caravan has classic rock roots, the band also adds a modern touch to their music, making “Portals” an exciting release. The band’s current status is reflected in the guests they gained for the new album. No less than Mikael Åkerfeldt, the main man of Opeth, contributes vocals to the opener, “Philosopher,” making it a stunning first chapter of the album. “Philosopher” has the magical touch we know from Iceland’s gorgeous landscapes. The Vintage Caravan manages to capture this mood in their music, and the opener is an excellent ambassador for their artistry.

Listening to “Portals” is like embarking on a musical journey through impressive soundscapes, and after some songs, listeners are led through a new portal. Behind this portal, The Vintage Caravan presents another treat for your ears, such as the pulsating “Days Go By.” This song’s infectious groove is one of its great qualities, while the chorus showcases the melodic sensibility of the Icelandic rockers.

From throbbing rock songs, such as the psychedelic “Here You Come Again,” to emotional and introspective songs, exemplified by “Current,” The Vintage Caravan showcases the full spectrum of classic rock. Performed with passion and written with a keen sense of melody, the album is a rocking kaleidoscope. Although powerful, there is also a certain heavy-heartedness connected to “Portals,” reflected in calmer songs like “Crossroads.” “Alone” has a great melody, and “Freedom” is a more thunderous rock song about freedom and togetherness.

The raging “Riot” showcases a rebellious mindset, while the acoustic “My Aurora” serves as its musical counterpart. “This Road” is the rocking anthem that concludes an exciting journey through various portals. Not every portal reveals a new musical twist. However, the entire variety of The Vintage Caravan’s musical vision is expressed on this album. Soulful, touching moments alternate with pure rock intensity. Backed by a dense, powerful sound, “Portals” is a fantastic rock album with enough musical richness to provide lasting enjoyment for fans of great rock music.
