Review FEANOR “Hellhammer”

“Hellhammer” is the title of the new album from the Argentinian metal band Feanor. The band formed in 1996 and has released four full-length albums to date. With “Hellhammer, ” the Buenos Aires–based metal squad has their next album ready to hit the shelves.

Four years after launching Power of the Chosen One, the power metal enthusiasts recorded thirteen new songs, staying true to their sound. Rooted in ’80s metal, with bands like Manowar as a source of inspiration, the Argentinian metal outfit plays traditional power metal also showing references to German metal bands of that time.

The album opens with the upbeat “Sirens of Death,” which, in addition to its fast pace, showcases the band’s talent for memorable choruses. The tempo remains high throughout “Bad Decisions,” and listening to these tunes, I was reminded of bands like Helloween and Blind Guardian in their early days.

The pounding title track differs from the first two songs, reminding me more of Manowar’s battle anthems. “H.M.J.” is an homage to Running Wild. There is a lot of Rock’n’Rolf-inspired metal to appreciate, extending beyond music. Lyrically, the song also pays homage to Running Wild.

The album contains a short, ballad-like interlude with “Forged in Steel” and a stomping metal track, “The Fight of the Valkyries.” “Houses of Fire” is a blisteringly fast metal song reminiscent of the first two tracks on the album. Then, we transition to “The Ballad of Baren and Luthien,” an eight-minute composition with narrative moments, pounding sections, and a lot of pathos. Feanor includes a bit too much in “The Ballad of Baren and Luthien,” and the last part especially feels lengthy. In contrast, the closing track, “This One’s for You,” takes a more targeted approach without sacrificing bombast.

“Hellhammer” isn’t a musical revolution. This album is influenced by bands like Helloween, Manowar and others. However, the songs are well-crafted and powerfully produced. This makes “Hellhammer” an entertaining album from the moment one starts listening to it. Feanor delivers a solid new record — nothing more, nothing less.
