Review MIKE TRAMP “Songs of White Lion — Vol. III”

White Lion was a mega-selling band in the ’80s, and songs like “Fight to Survive” and “Pride” are hard rock classics. Who could forget the 1989 release, “Big Game”?! The combination of guitarist and singer was often a band’s most important element. In this case, it was the six-string master, Vito Bratta, and the Danish singer, Mike Tramp, who wrote most of the songs. To give these songs a new feel, Tramp started the trilogy, “Songs of White Lion,” in 2023.

Vol. 2 followed in 2024, and now Vol. 3 hits the shelves. To be honest, what was a great idea in 2023 has lost some of its fascination. Since White Lion only released four albums, it’s surprising that revisiting these songs is spread over three albums. This doesn’t diminish the greatness of the classics, though. Vol. 3 includes “Warsong,” a tune that is more relevant today than ever. The pounding title track of the debut album “Fight to Survive” is another important song in White Lion’s legacy. However, there’s one question: Why did Tramp also reimagine “Radar Love”? The song, originally by Golden Earring, was a successful single released by White Lion. Still, it feels odd that such a song made it onto an homage to White Lion.

In summary. What started as a great idea led to a first album and some rocking live shows. However, with Vol. 2 and especially Vol. 3, things have gone too far. One compilation of the very best songs would have done the trick, so “Songs of White Lion — Vol. I” remains the essential part of this series.
