Glenn Hughes is one of the greats in rock. The singer and bassist from Cannock, England, started out in the early 70s with a band called Trapeze, and he entered the spotlight when he joined Deep Purple in 1973. This brought a lot of attention to Hughes, which also benefited his first solo album, released in 1977.
Hughes has been part of many bands, contributed to numerous projects, and released additional solo albums over the years. His newest effort, “Chosen, ” marks another highlight in his career. The album contains ten new songs that showcase a musician with a strong passion for music and a rock-and-roll heartbeat.
It all starts with “Voices in My Head,” a great rock song with a bluesy vibe, no matter what these voices say. A few funky touches are the icing on the cake, making “Voices in My Head” a stunning opener.
Next is the thumping “My Alibi,” which alternates between a calm verse and a powerful chorus. It’s an intense song that brings you to the title track. “Chosen” is a darker song, especially in the verse, before slowly growing into a fierce rocker with an immediately addictive chorus.
“Heal” is a spot-on rocker with hit potential, while the roaring “In the Golden” showcases the heaviness that Hughes incorporates into his musical spectrum. Heavy riffs compete with calmer, well-crafted vocal melodies.
“The Lost Parade” is next, with heavy blues-rock structures. This slower-paced, pounding hard rock song showcases Hughes’s vocal skills perfectly.
The album has no weak spots, and the rhythm-focused “Black Cat Moan” showcases the versatility of “Chosen.”
“Come and Go” is another great moment that echoes some The Beatles’ influence. It’s a beautiful, ballad-esque song that showcases Hughes’s ability to convey emotion through different musical expressions .
The album finale, “Into the Fade” comes with an infectious groove that makes the song a great closer. It is one of the best songs on an album with only great songs.
With “Chosen, ” Glenn Hughes releases an excellent album that combines all of his musical influences. A melange of rock, blues, and funk has been blended to create superb songs that are authentic and resonate the strong passion of Hughes.
