Review A-Z “A2Z2”

One of the most exciting bands around these days is A-Z. The group formed in 2020 and is the brainchild of Fates Warning frontman Ray Alder and Warlord drummer Mark Zonder. A-Z premiered with a self-titled debut album in 2022. The album combined the sound of Fates Warning with melodic hard rock, resulting in great songs. What initially looked like a one-time project has taken on a life of its own, as A-Z is set to release a second album.

The title of this sophomore release is A2Z2, and it features ten new and awesome songs. The band launched with “Nothing Is Over,” a lead single that was more than just a new song. It was a statement that this great outfit would continue, and, as the song reflects all the band’s trademarks—from great hooks to sophisticated song structures—the future looks bright for fans of good melodies and musical craftsmanship. Watching the video not only reveals a fantastic song, but also shows musicians who clearly enjoy playing great music.

The 49-minute journey through the world of melodic rock and metal begins with the song “Fire Away.” It’s an energetic and dynamic way to start the record, and the song is a great scene-setter. “Running in Place” is the next track and has more of a Fates Warning approach. The track isn’t too complex, but it has some exciting twists that, combined with the great melody, ignite a rock firework.

The earlier-mentioned “Nothing Is Over” leads to the somber start of “A Wordless Prison.” With Alder’s great voice serving as the centerpiece, the song has a deeper intensity that culminates in an outburst in the second half.

One of the in-your-face songs on the album is “I Am Numb,” which was also revealed prior to the album’s release. It’s a straightforward song that showcases the band members’ musical talent during the layered bridge. Another song that unveils great soundscapes is the cinematic “This Chaotic Symphony,” which includes a throbbing middle section that fans of excellent hard rock music will really enjoy.

A-Z are masters of their craft, allowing the band to create music that appeals from the first listen, with details and twists that provide lasting value. This echoes in songs like “Learning to Fly” with its earworm chorus. “Now I Walk Away,” the last track on the album, leaves us hoping the band won’t walk away. Their newest effort is etremely good, and it will certainly be a musical highlight of 2025. The epic closer rounds off an album that will please fans of well-crafted music combining catchiness and profound musical passion.
