Review CIRITH UNGOL “Live at The Roxy”

Cirith Ungol are among the pioneers when it comes to epic metal. Formed in 1976, the band from Ventura, California is a true trailblazer when it comes to heavy metal, with their debut album “Frost and Fire” released in 1981 paving the way for an impressive career. Like few other bands, the guys defined an entire genre and released four all-time classics during their first era.

After a split in 1992, the band returned in 2015, which was a big moment in the metal world. The second era included two more studio albums that easily connected to the previous releases. Later, the band announced that 2024 would be the year that Cirith Ungol would embark on their final tour, and before that, the guys recorded a live show that they played at The Roxy in West Hollywood, California.

The five-piece performed a two-hour set, which included new material as well as the well-known classics. The first part of the set was dedicated to the “Dark Parade” album, which was played in its entirety, before moving into the “Best of…” part of the show. “Atom Smasher” was the first smasher from the early days, taking everybody back to 1984.

As mentioned, the show was recorded and is now available in various formats, including a live DVD of this special night. As you would expect from a band like Cirith Ungol, the sound of the recording is powerful and represents the live dynamics of the band. At the same time the album sounds raw and unpolished. It is a very authentic live release and a gem for all fans of perfectly crafted epic metal.

“Live at the Roxy” is a great way to sum up the amazing work of a very special band. Cirith Ungol’s music is timeless and a treat for metal fans of all ages. Tim Balker, with his siren-like voice, Greg Lindstrom, Robert Graven and their bandmates can look back on an impressive career with music that has left a huge footprint when it comes to heavy metal. And, in contrary to the 2013 announcement, there is a future for Cirith Ungol with even a new album in the making.
