Review W.E.T. “Apex”

Formed in 2008, W.E.T. can be described as a supergroup. Well, at least the three driving forces are well-established musicians. Jeff Scott Soto, Erik Mårtensson and Robert Säll started W.E.T. and it might be the case that in the beginning it was more of a project of passionate melodic metal musicians.

The story of W.E.T. starts with the self-titled debut album, which was acclaimed by fans and media. After such a start, the trio continued with the band and today the three guys still work together under the banner of W.E.T. Four years following the release of the album “Retransmission”, the three-piece powerhouse releases their fifth studio album called “Apex”. There are eleven songs on this newest effort, and each of these tracks is a musical treat for fans of big choruses and hook-driven rock music.

The first thing you notice is the excellent production. “Apex” benefits from a great and very dynamic soundas it was Eric Mårtensson at the helm who gave the album what it needed. “Apex” is a very lively longplayer and it is the first song, “Believer”, that sets the tone as the opener combines all the trademarks of the band. There are the great vocals of Soto, the catchy melodies and a lot of energy that fills the room.

W.E.T. never compromise on a good melody. It doesn’t matter if it’s a more popular sounding song like “What are We Fighting For”, a tune that could help the band to open up to a wider audience. Alongside these ear candy, the album also has some powerful tracks like “Breaking Up” with its roaring start and upbeat chorus.

“Nowhere to Ruin” contains some bluesy moments, while “Pleasure & Pain” is one of the album’s more soulful tunes. Although not being the most innovative song, “Pleasure & Pain” doesn’t follow the worn-out paths of mainstream. It is an emotional song that adds to the great flow of the album.

Stay Alive” is another excellent rock song on the album with irresistible melodies, before “Day By Day” is a great track to wrap up the album.

“Apex” is the next chapter in a success story. Soto, Mårtensson and Säll have added another highlight to their list of achievements. It is an energetic, catchy record that shows just how much potential and creativity melodic rock can have when three masters of rock follow their hearts above all else. This colourful album is perfect to welcome the spring and summer season.
