I don’t think anyone older than three years is afraid of Lordi‘s masquerade, and the image of the horror rockers from Finland was never based on shocking. The whole fancy costumes and everything connected with it is more a tool to create an identity. It helped the band to get some attention in the early days and still belongs to the trademarks of the Finns. Even more amazing is the fact that Lordi is not a one-hit wonder.
The peak of their popularity was certainly their participation in the European Song Contest. What deserves respect is that the band was able to maintain their popularity.
The guys released their debut album “Get Heavy” in 2002, and since then the five-piece has been regularly launching new records with well-done hard rock anthems.
Their latest strike is called “Limited Deadition” and the band never gets tired of playing with words. As one would expect, Lordi remain true to their sound, which is rooted in the golden age of melodic hard rock. The 80’s sound resonates in every song. “Skelephant in the Room” even goes a step further and shows some AOR references.
“Limited Deadition” starts with an intro called “SCG XIX The Hexecutioners” and the latest work of the Finns contains some more interludes. In a way they are fun as they add to the cinematic approach of the album. These sequences support the overarching theme in a good way and support the flow of an album that contains a stomping hard rock song with “Sytax Terror” that unfolds its catchiness immediately.
The soulful moment on the record, in a Lordi context, is the piano-driven “Collectable,” which is anything but a love song. It’s more of a story about the evil in some toys and the mania to complete the collection.
“Limited Deadition” lives up to expectations. A story with a twinkle in the eye, a homage to the rock/metal sound of the 80s and a catchiness you can’t resist, that’s what this album is about. Lordi follow their musical direction without compromise and I think that is part of their success. They don’t take themselves too seriously and deliver pure entertainment – nothing more, nothing less.
