Review SPIDERS “Sharp Objects”

Gothenburg, Sweden has a pretty vibrant rock and metal scene. Not only melodic death metal has a strong home base in Sweden’s second largest city. There are also excellent rock bands coming from there. One of them is Spiders, who debuted in 2012 with an album called “Flash Point”, which immediately entered the Swedish charts.

After the release of their third album, “Killer Machine”, fans had to wait a long time before the band announced new material. With “Sharp Objects” the fourth longplayer was now released, the first longplayer in seven years.

Spiders haven’t lost any of their passion for great rock music inspired by the 70s and 80s. The spirit of rock from Detroit is swinging in many of these songs and sometimes there is also a bit of punk too. In this context, what could be better than to start the album with a song called “Rock’n’Roll Band”. It is a powerful beginning of the album, followed by a song called “Sweet Boy”. The latter is a moderately paced rock song with an infectious chorus.

The aforementioned punk vibes are the driving element of “What’s Your Game (Miss Insane)” before “Fun in the Sun” surprises with a New Wave spirit. These songs show the diversity of influences, all bound together by the power of rock’n’roll. The Dandy Warhols could have delivered the blueprint for the grooving “Schizoid,” while “Mess With Your Emotions” offers straightforward rock music. A soulful moment on the album is “Valentines,” which showcases the great voice of singer Ann-Sofie Hoyles, before “Love Yourself to Death” brings back the essence of hard rock music. With “Would You Miss Me?” the album also includes a thunderous closer that can easily compete with the other ten tracks.

“Sharp Objects is a great rock album. Excellent songs and a great feel for melodies make each of these tracks an entertaining treat that provides lasting enjoyment. Spiders work through the entire spectrum of rock, resulting in a versatile album with songs that show great consistency when it comes to quality. Even though it took Spiders a while to finish this album, it was well worth the wait. These songs are raw and catchy anthems and represent the beauty of rock from start to finish.
