Review MOON WIZARD “Sirens”

Moon Wizard is a band that probably isn’t that well known in Europe, even though the guys have already released three albums. The band from Salt Lake City, Utah started in 2018 and independently launched two longplayers. The self-titled debut hit the shelves in 2019 and a year later “The Night Harvest” followed. With “Sirens”, the four-piece presented their fourth album a year ago, and a deal with Hammerheart Records allows the band to make their music more widely known.

The Dutch label will release “Sirens” in January, and fans of doom and stoner rock should keep the band on their radar.

Aaron, Joe and Ashton formed the group after leaving their death and black metal roots to focus on stoner rock. With Sami Wolf the guys found a good singer, which led to an album like “Sirens”. It’s not that the four guys are reinventing stoner rock, but what comes out of the speakers is music that makes your eardrums swing.

Songs like the melancholic “Magnolia” create a special atmosphere that goes beyond simple stoner rock. There is a psychedelic aspect to the music that, together with an addictive melody, casts a spell on the listener.

The starting point of the album is a song called “Meteor” that relies on some pounding rock roots, while “Epoch” is more of a moderately paced musical fever dream. And there is no doubt that a song called “Desert Procession” is based on stoner rock passion.

“Sirens” is a very well-crafted stoner rock/metal album that carries a lot of heart and soul from the four musicians involved. Moon Wizard is a young band and their third fulllength album manifests the musical soul of everyone involved. It is a very real and authentic release without any distracting frills.
