Review ATHENA XIX “Everflow Part 1: Frames Of Humanity”

Athena XIX might be a band name that some of you still remember. The progressive metal outfit was formed in Pisa, Italy in 1991 and released three full length albums before disbanding in 2002 after the band’s ‘Twilight of Days’ longplayer. More than two decades later, Athena XIX return with “Everflow Part 1: Frame of Humanity”.

The reunion includes not only founder Fabio Lione but also collaborators from the early days, which means that we are looking at a real reunion of an ambitious prog metal outfit.

As the title suggests, the fourth longplayer is a concept album and what we hold in our hands is the first chapter. Contemporary themes and philosophical reflections form the intellectual foundation for the story and the music exponentiates the narrative, inspired by movies like “The Matrix” and “Strange Days”.

Musically, the album brings things into the here and now, as “Everflow Part 1: Frame of Humanity” shows the roots while sounding more modern. Despite the many twists and turns in the songs, the album has a great flow, which also has to do with the melodic aspect. The latter allows you to surf through the tracklist with ease, while enjoying the layers that you explore more with each spin of the album.

“I Wish” is the longest track on the album with a playing time of five minutes, which shows that Athena XIX don’t rely on endless songs with extended solo parts. It’s the song itself that is the real gem that helps the story come alive. “I Wish” is also special because it is the only track with a guest appearance. Roy Khan, known from his time in Kamelot and Conception, contributes with some vocals and both voices fit together quite well. In a way, this collaboration reflects the approach of Athena XIX. Bands like Kamelot, but also Evergrey and Symphony X are following a similar musical path, combining progressive structures and powerful metal energy.

One of the best songs is the dark “The Calm Before the Storm”, which comes with a rather hypnotic rhythm and is one of the most addictive pieces of music on this longplayer. Also interesting is “Legacy of the World” with its electronica driven start before the song develops into a cinematic prog metal song. It shows the versatility and influences on which the album is built.

“Everflow Part 1: Frame of Humanity” is a well-crafted reunion album with a lot to explore.
Although the songs reveal some of their appeal the first time you spin the record, there is plenty to explore along the way. This record provides entertainment on a high level for a long time.
