Review BOMBUS “Your Blood”

Gothenburg, Sweden is a city that has not only brought great melodic death metal bands to the surface. The city in the southwest of Sweden has a pretty vital music scene in general and one band that comes from there is Bombus.

The band formed in 2008 and released a really strong debut album titled “Bombus”. This first longplayer was the springboard for the band and brought them to the attention of Century Media. The label released the second album “The Poet and the Parrot”, which was a kind of breakthrough.

In 2024, Bombus returned with a new album. “Your Blood” is the fourth studio album of the Swedish heavy rockers and offers 38 minutes of dynamic and powerful rock.

“Killer” is the energetic start of the album. It’s a song that combines a good sense of melody with a gritty edge that also comes from the rougher vocals. While “Killer” is a typical Bombus song, the following “The One” shows another side of Bombus’ musical compass. Especially the verse has a very dark and partly pop-like vibe. But no worries. The guys never drown in the commercial mainstream and added enough firepower to a song that could become a great single release.

The variations on “Your Blood” also result from the fact that the band recorded the album themselves without any outside influences. This means that the fans get 100% Bombus and indeed the album sounds authentic and real. While the album benefits from an excellent sound, it still sounds raw and inhales the full rock’n’roll spirit.

A song you shouldn’t miss is the title track. Dark and gloomy, that’s how “Your Blood” starts and the basic mood doesn’t change as the song gains energy. This song is a well chosen name-giver for the album, as it reflects the dirt under the fingernails as well as the richness of Bombus’ music.

The fact that Motörhead is one of Bombus’ most influential bands is evident in “The Beast” and the same goes for “Leave and Let Die”. However, it must be mentioned that the quintet has many bands that have shaped their music, which makes each of these eleven songs a great blend of different styles.

“Your Blood” is the first Bombus album in five years and it seems that the guys have made good use of their time. The quintet from Gothenburg still build their songs on the wildness and anarchic spirit of rock’n’roll. It’s the foundation from which Bombus evolves and it’s the new album that represents the next step for the band. “Your Blood” will make your heart beat faster.
