Review MASTER BOOT RECORD “Hardwarez”

Usually the numbers in metal are reduced to ‘666’. This standard was challenged in 2016, when an anonymous project started making headlines. Suddenly ‘0’ and ‘1’ took over when Italian multi-instrumentalist Vittorio D’Amore founded Master Boot Record.

After some longplayers and EPs the project released a their first album for Metal Blade Records called “Floppy Disc Overdrive” in 2020, and with the success of that release, it was obvious that another longplayer was only a matter of time. “Personal Computer” is the title of this sophomore release, and the latest effort is waiting in the starting blocks.

“Hardwarez” is the third album by the Italian visionary and it is a logical continuation of what fans have admired on the first two releases. The first track D’Amore wrote is “CPU” which sets the scene for the album. Heavy riffing, samples and a very rhythmic approach is what drives the song. When listening to the album, one is reminded of the days of the C64 and the ‘Captain Future’ cartoon, at least when it comes to synths and samples. The mighty riffs, however, add some harshness to this unique fusion. In the end, it is this blend of styles that makes each Master Boot Record release a sophisticated and unique sonic experience. It’s innovation based on passion and the will to try something new. It comes straight from the digital heart instead of just being sketches on a drawing board. There is a human element to this technical approach to music that creates an exciting tension. Contrasts are what this album plays with, whether it’s the majestic “RAM” or the heavy pounding “CASE”.

“Hardwarez” is the next exciting step from Master Boot Record. It’s a stunning mixture of genres, bridging synth pop, industrial and metal with roots mainly in the 90s. As on the previous longplayers also this release fascinates. “Hardwarez” is the perfect match of a digital heart and a human soul. Rarely zeros and ones have spread such a thrill.
