Myles Kennedy is one of the great names in contemporary rock and metal. The singer’s career took off when he joined Alter Bridge at the beginning of the new millennium. His voice, which covers four octaves, became one of the trademarks of the alternative rock giants, while Kennedy’s musical efforts are broader than just focusing on Alter Bridge.
Kennedy has released albums with Slash as well as solo material. With “The Art of Letting Go”, Kennedy has completed work on his third solo effort, which follows the rather successful “The Ides of March” longplayer from 2021.
With “Say What You Will”, a song was released before the album’s release that shows that the new album has a very solid hard rock flair. It’s a track that shows Kennedy’s voice as well as his guitar skills. “Say What You Will” is a vibrant song with a rebellious spirit that serves as a well-chosen attention-grabber for the album.
“The Art of Letting Go” is a very powerful album. It’s not so much the breathtaking innovation, but rather the commitment and execution of powerful hard rock that makes listening to the album a good time.
With “Miss You When You’re Gone” the album contains a song that saw the light of day a few weeks ago. The song is a bit catchier than “Say What You Will” and could generate some airplay moments. It is a typical Myles Kennedy song, which means that we are facing great rock music and at the same time the singer/guitarist stays a bit too much in his comfort zone.
A good rock album also needs a soulful moment and when it comes to “The Art Of Letting Go” it’s “Eternal Lullaby” that has the potential to activate the tear gland. The song is an emotional moment of the album and it’s Kennedy’s voice that adds some extra energy to this half ballad.
The acoustic guitar also plays a larger role at the beginning of “Behind The Veil.” What begins as a heartwarming ballad develops into a vibrant, roaring rocker. The throbbing “Nothing More to Gain” is kept darker than some of the other songs on this longplayer, before the riffs get heavier with “Dead to Rights”, a dynamic alternative rock song with all the Myles Kennedy trademarks.
“How the Story Ends” is the last track on the album and in a way combines all the elements of Myles Kennedy’s third solo effort. Powerful and with great vocal melodies, the song also has its quieter moments and shows the full range of Myles Kennedy’s sound.
“The Art of Letting Go” is a nicely done rock album. It’s an entertaining way to spend 46 minutes and shows a musician who is passionate about contemporary rock music, which would have been even more exciting if Kennedy had stepped out of his musical comfort zone a few more times. Still, a great album made with good musicianship.
