Review SWEET “Full Circle”

Sweet are true veterans when it comes to rock music. Founded in 1968, the band is one of the most important pioneers in rock music, and hits like “Ballroom Blitz” and “Fox on the Run” speak for themselves and their new album is about to hit the shelves.

Andy Scott is the driving force behind the current Sweet, as he is the only remaining founding member of the legendary band from London, UK. Together with a rather renewed line-up, Andy Scott’s Sweet recorded eleven new songs and I was curious about what to expect.

To be honest, it took a while for the songs to blossom and the impression I got after the first listen wasn’t the best. However, I have to say that “Full Circle”” is a grower. Each time I hit the ‘play’-button, the songs get better and better and I actually enjoy the album a lot.

The start of “Full Circle” is short and crisp. “Circus” is a perfect opener, a rock song with a great groove and the chorus with the lyrics “Life is a circus, surrounded by clowns” is so true and reminds us not to take everything so damn serious.

“Don’t Bring Me Water” is next. It’s a smooth rocking tune with the message that everyone has to make their own experiences.

“Changes” is certainly a rather commercial song with a pop appeal, a sound that belongs to the group as well, followed by the very melodic “Defender”. “Everything” starts out soulful before turning into a gently grooving song with a lot of vocal power from Paul Manzi.

“Destination Hannover” is an upbeat tune that inhales the essence of rock, a musical road trip through Germany’s big cities, while AOR echoes with “Rising Up”. “Fire in My Heart” shows that the flame of rock’n’roll is still burning before “Coming Home” and the rhythmic title track heralds the end of a surprisingly good album.

“Full Circle” is a well-crafted rock album that combines the history of rock with a modern expression. The result is a roaring longplayer that proves rock ‘n’ roll is never a question of age.
