Review FULCI “Duck Face Killing”

The Italian brute death metal squad Fulci started in 2013 and released three full-length albums, with the fourth one waiting in line. “Duck Face Killings” is the title of the latest offering from the Italian band, which hasn’t changed much when it comes to a lyrical approach to music.

Inspired by the movies of the infamous Italian director Lucio Fulci, the band creates fourteen new death metal songs and as with the previous releases, the latest effort is also connected to a Fulci movie. This time it is the depraved “The New York Ripper” that provides the lyrical inspiration for this release.

Besides the horror and splatter inspired lyrical concept, it is the music itself that should get more attention. Massive riffing, deep growls, creepy interludes and a solid groove characterize the album, which can compete with some of the genre pioneers from the USA.

The beginning of the album speaks volumes. A spoken word intro, probably taken from a movie sequence, kicks off the album before the massive “Vile Butchery” opens the gates to hell. Interesting is the following interlude, which reflects the connection to the movie and could be part of a soundtrack. The synth interlude “A Blade in the Dark” reminds me with its dystopian vibe of “Escape from New York”, the famous John Carpenter movie.

“Duck Face Killing” is not an album for the faint of heart. It is a brutal Death Metal inferno that provides a metallic soundtrack to Lucio Fulci’s splatter movies. Should you watch the disgusting movie? Probably not. Should you listen to the album? If you’re a fan of well done death metal with no compromises – yes.
