Introducing a band like Anvil would be like carrying sand to the beach. Everyone knows these guys, who belong to the group of highly respected bands in metal. Relentlessly pursuing their passion for heavy metal, the three-piece band has released a number of studio albums, and “One and Only” is the latest.
Robb, Lips and Chris have produced twelve new songs, which is the track list of this album. I don’t think anyone is expecting much change when it comes to the pounding sound of Anvil. The band is sticking to what they’re good at and that’s powerful heavy metal that comes straight from the heart. It is the energy and commitment of the band that makes an Anvil album a joyful release that will live up to expectations.
The Canadians begin their 20th studio album with the title track and its a typical Anvil song. Roaring guitars and a pounding beat, together with a harsh but melodic vocal lines is what “One and Only” offers and what Anvil cultivates over the last decades.
It’s not the technical finesse not its the jaw-dropping twists that makes an Anvil album to a good one. It is the unbound passion for rock and metal being the common thread throughout these twelve songs.
The rock driven ‘Feed Your Fantasy’ is such a great moment and the following ‘Fight For Your Rights’ adds another aspect to the album. Rooted in metal, the song unfolds at a breathtaking pace with Anvil’s foot on the pedal. These three opening tracks are very representative for ‘One and Only’.
Throughout the years, the band has never gotten tired of what they do and why should they. Rock and metal run through their veins and Anvil is their life in a way. That’s why “One and Only” sounds so dynamic and fresh. There is also a lot of fun, which makes the album a bright moment in dark times.
Anvil have gone through so many tough times and always found their way back to shallow waters. Thismade the band stronger and allows the three guys to follow their heart. Trends and hypes don’t play a role when it comes to Anvil’s sound and that’s reflected on the new album.
“Dead Man Shoes” has a bit of a Motörhead vibe, while the following “Truth is Dying” deals with a very relevant topic. Or drop the needle on the rocking ‘Run Away’ and you will not be disappointed.
“One and Only” represents the one and only Anvil from start to finish. Anyone looking for an authentic and down-to-earth rock and metal experience needs to check out this release.
