Review RHAPSODY OF FIRE “Challenge the Wind”

Alex Staropoli is the only remaining founding member of Italian metal force Rhapsody Of Fire. The band, that started in the early 90s, had a fulminant take-off, especially considering the fact of being in the surrounded by death metal, nu metal and grunge. The band’s success was undoubtedly due to their ability to deliver a counterpart to the trends at the time.

However, there is much more to their music than that. Rhapsody Of Fire has been in business for over three decades, and they have consistently maintained their musical direction and style. They have made minor adjustments to their compass, but they have never strayed too far from their melodic power metal sound. This sound is enriched with some neo-classical elements, and it is this combination that has made them a success. The new album, “Challenge the Wind,” maintains the band’s signature melodic power metal sound, which fans will undoubtedly appreciate.

The album opens with the title track, showcasing the band’s signature blend of speed and melody. This is further exemplified in “The Bloody Pariah” and the cinematic “Holy Downfall.” The latter is dramatic and catchy, and although it is kept in a more moderate pace, it is a great representative of “Challenge the Wind”.

When talking about this album, we cannot overlook a song called “Vanquished by Shadows”. This is a 16-minute epic that totally fits the Rhapsody of Fire sound. The dramatic and dark soundscapes of this song are the best the band has ever released. It’s the versatility and operatic expression that make it so special. The melodic nature of the song doesn’t rely on high-speed and sugar-sweet melodies alone.

Rhapsody Of Fire sticks to their winning formula and adds a few extra twists to the expected standard. Fans of the Italian powerhouse will love what they get offered, and even if you’re not part of this group of metalheads, the album has enough to offer to entertain you right away.
