Review HELLBUTCHER “Hellbutcher”

Nifelheim is without a doubt a Swedish metal institution. The band is one of the icons of blackened thrash metal, and it is their uncompromising approach that has made them real pioneers. Now, after the end of Nifelheim, frontman Hellbutcher isn’t wasting any time in continuing the metal journey with a new outfit.

Hellbutcher is the name of this new group with Per Gustavsson in the lead. The metal veteran releases the first album with his new outfit and it is a blast. In line with Nifelheim’s history, Hellbutcher also focus on furious and ferocious metal. The track list of this debut album is packed with evil and grim metal that inhales the true spirit of heavy metal.

Hellbutcher and his comprades have forged a metal album that throws a devilish grin at you as soon as you press the start button. Nothing on this album is made for commerce or fame. What comes out of the speakers is raging and anarchic. Just listen to the fast and furious ‘Violent Destruction’ and you’ll know what I’m talking about. Blistering riffs, breathtaking speed and a hellish vibe are what challenge your eardrums. The thrash metal passion is embedded in every note played and in a way I was reminded of the wildness of the early Kreator days.

That the NWoBHM is another factor for Hellbutcher’s musical endeavours can be experienced when listening to the fabulous “Possessed By The Devil’s Flame”. Furious solos and a powerful guitar melody push the song to the limit. It is also a pleasure to listen to the rock’n’roll driven “Death’s Rider” with its blackened look.

Hellbutcher deliver the anticipated great debut album. Furious and with two feet on the metal, this is how the band approaches metal and reveals the essence of it. The sound of Iron Maiden, Bathory and Venom – it all comes together on this debut. Enjoy the hellish ride and bang your head from start to finish.
